What is firestop?
Firestop is a system of sealants, mortars, wraps, and pillows that seal openings in fire-rated walls and floors. It stops fire, smoke, and gases from traveling through the paths cut for pipes, cables, and joints.
Is firestop required by code?
Yes, in New Jersey and everywhere else that follows the IBC. Any penetration or joint in a fire-rated wall, floor, or ceiling must be sealed with a tested firestop system. Commercial and multi-family projects will not pass inspection without it.
What kinds of penetrations need firestopping?
Any hole through a fire-rated assembly: plumbing pipes, HVAC ducts, electrical conduit, low-voltage cables, and structural joints. Each one gets a UL system matched to the wall rating and what passes through it.
Can regular caulk or foam be used instead?
No. Only tested and listed firestop materials count under code. Regular caulk and off-the-shelf spray foam will not hold back fire or smoke and will fail inspection.
Do you provide certification and documentation?
Yes. We photograph and log each install, then hand over certificates and system numbers for the inspector, the general contractor, and your records.
